  • Because they are fun!
  • I just see it as though they're games and playing a continuous game over the internet with all your closest friends also seems pretty fun and addicting. Who can get the most friends? Can we coordinate a 100-man poke on someone? Let's see how many pictures we can find of Bob with him yawning and post them all in an album. On a side note: I feel AB should be up there too, as while it's not quite the same as it's less invasive on one's privacy, it still feels like a social networking site and has the addiction value.
  • I would add answerbag too. I keep in touch with friends who travel or live away on facebook. I challenge them to games like scrabble and its fun. Answerbag means you can connect and be more open as you wont meet.
  • I really don't know why, to be honest. They are not my thing at all.
  • Social networking sites allow the user to communicate with his/her friends without having to commit to the requirements of a conversation in person. It's sort of like the text messaging phenomenon... no need to fill the conversation with mindless small talk like we often feel necessary to do. Plus, sites like Facebook allow the user to view pictures and communicate with people who he/she hasn't seen or spoken to for months, years or even decades. It's very non-invasive and provides a "talk when you want" sort of environment. It's also great for stalking!
