Best is reading a book then MP3 music. They stop complete strangers asking personal questions.

I love watching the little map on the tv screen - watching what I am flying over, and looking out the window to see if I can see major geographical features! The first time I flew to USA from UK, my nephew (he was 5 at the time, and heavily into looking at maps - his Atlas was his favourite book), told me to look out the window. he told me I would know when I was over the Atlantic, cause I would see the words "Atlantic Ocean" written in white letters. I also read, play games, and eat - they tend to feed you every time you look restless on long flights.

Buy some puzzles books, a brand new book, and a pen a paper. If you are going on a holiday it is good to document facts/places and times for future reference.

If I cant sleep, which is usually the case, I read a book or two, and sometimes I plug in my iPod and make up stories about the people on the flight with me...people-watching is so fascinating and there are usually at least a few interesting characters! Who is that person, where are they going, why do they look so happy/sad/angry, what would happen if...?
