  • "The Holocaust (the word derives from the Greek holókauston (Oλόκαυστον = Oλον [completely] + καυστον [burnt])., also known as Ha-Shoah (Hebrew: השואה), Khurbn (Yiddish: חורבן or Halokaust, האלאקאוסט, is the term generally used to describe the killing of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, as part of a program of deliberate extermination planned and executed by the National Socialist regime in Germany led by Adolf Hitler. Other groups were also persecuted and killed by the regime, including 220,000 Sinti and Roma (see Porajmos), as well as the disabled (see Action T4), homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet POWs, Polish citizens, and political prisoners. Many scholars do not include these groups in the definition of the Holocaust, defining it as the genocide of the Jews, or what the Nazis called the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" ("Die Endlösung der Judenfrage"). Taking into account all the victims of Nazi persecution, the death toll rises considerably; estimates generally place the total number of victims at nine to 11 millions." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocaust
  • The Holocaust was the systematic annihilation of six million Jews by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis during World War 2. In 1933 approximately nine million Jews lived in the 21 countries of Europe that would be military occupied by Germany during the war. By 1945 two out of every three European Jews had been killed by the Nazis. 1.5 million children were murdered. This figure includes more than 1.2 million Jewish children, tens of thousands of Gypsy children and thousands of handicapped children.

The name "Holocaust" means "sacrifice by fire, burnt offering," in reference to the way so many millions walked to their deaths like lambs to the slaughter to be gassed and then burnt. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=holocaust&searchmode=none The Holocaust was especially shocking due to its size, scale, systematic nature and the fact that it was launched by the most western cultured nation of the age, Germany.
  • I just finished reading a book called "The Lost" by Daniel Mendelsohn. It explains the Holocaust, in the author's search for what happened to his great-uncle and family. Gut wrenching, but well written.

  • Well, it was not cheese and crackers or pony rides and sunshine. That is a little too broad of a question. I have a hard time believing that this is a serious question. If you want to learn about the Holocaust, look here: http://fcit.usf.edu/holocaust/default.htm Here is the short version: ho·lo·caust 'hO-l&-"kost, 'hä- also -"kästor'ho-l&-kost noun 3 a often cap. : the mass slaughter of European civilians and especially Jews (and Gypsies) by the Nazis during World War II -- usually used with the b : a mass slaughter of people; especially genocide. The "and Gypsies" added by me because we are usually forgotten. There were two peoples in the actual Final Solution: Jews and Gypsies. There are many more who are often forgotten, like homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Slavs, and so many more. If you want to learn about it, go to the link I provided or read in this forum. If you want to ask a more specific question, I shall answer it. This one was way to broad for any type of decent comprehensive answer.
  • A holocaust is a wholesale slaughter on a mass scale. It has happened many times throughout history and happens to this day in countries around the world. There is no,per say,one holocaust only. Also the terms have changed to things like ethnic cleansing, but the meaning is the same.Ignoring the starving in parts of Africa, the events in Serbia/Bosnia about 10 years ago, area were horrific as well.
  • ""The Holocaust" is the name commonly applied since the mid 1970s to the killing of six million Jews by Nazi Germany during World War II. The term is also used more broadly to include all the victims of Nazi genocide and persecution between 1933 and 1945: political dissidents, Soviet POWs, the disabled, the Roma, Jehovah's Witnesses, and gay men. A number of other terms are also used to describe the genocide." "The word "holocaust" originally derived from the Greek word holokauston, meaning "a completely (holos) burnt (kaustos) sacrificial offering", or "a burnt sacrifice offered to a god". In Greek and Roman pagan rites, gods of the earth and underworld received dark animals, which were offered by night and burnt in full. The word "holocaust" was later adopted in Greek translations of the Torah to refer to the "olah", sacrificial burnt offerings that Jews were required to make." "The "Final Solution to the Jewish Problem" was the Nazis' own term, coined by Adolf Eichmann as a euphemism." "The biblical word Shoah (שואה), also spelled Shoa and Sho'ah, meaning "calamity" in Hebrew (and also used to refer to "destruction" since the Middle Ages), became the standard Hebrew term for the Holocaust as early as the early 1940s. In recent literature it is specifically prefixed with Ha ("The" in Hebrew) when referring to Nazi mass-murders, for the same reason that holocaust becomes The Holocaust. It may be spelled Ha-Shoah or HaShoah, as in Yom HaShoah. Churban Europa, meaning "European Destruction" in Hebrew (as opposed to simply Churban, the destruction of the Second Temple), is also used. The Hebrew word Shoah is preferred by some Jews and non-Jews due to the supposed theologically unacceptable nature of the word "holocaust" whose original Greek meaning indicates a sacrifice to a god." "The Porajmos (also Porrajmos) literally "Devouring", or Samudaripen ("Mass killing") is a term coined by the Roma people to describe attempts by the Nazis to exterminate most of the Roma peoples of Europe. The phenomenon has been little studied." • germany- and hitler- hated the jews so they rounded them all up and at first just tried to sed them somewhere else. but no where would take them, so in the end the jews were kept in ghettos and shot and work camps and even were taken to the gas chambers at one point. aka they were a whole lot killed by Anti-Semites. 6 million jews were killed in total about, and 11 million people when you include gypsies and all.
