  • From what I understand, everyone has to file by April 15.
  • Whether you have tax due or are getting a refund, you have to file by April 15th. Now, you can choose to file an automatic extension to get more time to get your paperwork together, but you still have to pay the estimated tax that you owe. Naturally, if you don't owe anything, you don't have to pay anything when you file for your automatic extension (still due April 15th or sooner).
  • It is true. If the government owes you money, you do not have to file by the April 15th deadline. If you make a mistake in your return, however, it can be quite costly if you owe the government and are filing late.
  • Filing date is 4/15, not 4/10 as you said. If you are due a refund, you can file an extension, which will give you until 10/15 to file a return. If you owe money, you can still file an extension, sending in what you anticipate you will owe. Remember an extension is ONLY an extension to file paperwork. Any and all money due is due by 4/15.
