u can either help or sympathize. thats enuff...unless they r reeeeeeeely digging umselves deeper in2 sadness...

I think that it overestimates the value of sympathy. Sympathy is useless.

I agree (to an extent). Sympathy can be nice, but it does nothing to help the person. Doing a little to help someone is definitely worth a lot more than just feeling compassion for someone. I'm not saying sympathy doesn't have its place and time, nor am I stating that sympathy is entirely worthless. But it's nowhere near the level of impact of a little bit of assistance, although knowing when one is needed over the other is important, too.
