  • The mum will wean them herself, usually when the sharp teeth start coming in. If it's a stray and you need to wean them yourself, please let them feed from her until about 6 weeks of age.
  • All they really need is 3 days to get the immunities - the rest are a plus. They can stop at about six weeks - you should have introduced some dry food by then and then just keep giving them more with a little bit of cows milk. They will be more intersted in that then. Higher fat content.
  • When there belly fills up.
  • Cats generally get weaned between 6 to 8 weeks. Please disregard comment telling you to give them cows milk. Cows milk can kill a kitten because they are lactose intolerant. NEVER GIVE A KITTEN COWS MILK. It will cause diarrhea which in most cases is fatal to a kitten. If you need to give it more nutrition get something called KMR (Kitten Mothers Replacer) which is a replacement for mothers milk. Buy it at WalMart or any pet store. Very inexpensive.
  • Kittens are best weaned at 8 weeks of age. They used to say it was 6 weeks but they have found that it's important for the kittens to be with their mother longer mainly for social development. If she wants them to stop suckling earlier, she will do it, but the extra time nursing does give them a little better nutritional strength.
