A spinal tap also known as a lumbar puncture is a procedure that is performed when a doctor needs to look at the cerebrospinal fluid and is not used to deliver pain relief in labour. An epidural can be used in labour and is an injection into the small of the back. A fine tube is passed through the needle and then the needle is then removed leaving the tube in place which is taped to the back. A local anaesthetic is injected into the tube to numb the lower part of the abdomen, the legs and feet also go numb. An epidural block is also used in labour and is a combination of a local anaesthetic and a narcotic that continuously relieves pain in the lower part of the body. A spinal block differs from an epidural in two ways...(a) it is administered directly into the fluid surrounding the spine...(b) a tube is not used instead of the tube a one-time injection is given.
