Since it's just manufactured and placed in packaging straightaway, I doubt if there is anything unsanitary about it. I've licked away for 54 years. I don't keep water near my desk area.
I use the self adhesive envelopes. NO MORE LICKING for me!!! NO WAY! LOL +5

Depends where the envelopes are made, and by whom. There have been cases where poison was placed on those envelopes you lick.

I do lick it when needed!
The adhesives on envelopes are safe to lick. Indeed some even come flavored. Like any chemical, however, there should be moderation. If your job requires you to lick hundreds of envelopes a day, I'd use water on a sponge. If you're just paying a handful of bills once a month, lick away.
Another potential hazard of licking envelopes is paper cuts on the tongue or lips.
