They aren't talking about an actual nerve. Nerve has a few definitions. Sure it can mean an actual nerve of the human body, but it is also a sore point or sensitive subject, courage and control under pressure, fortitude, stamina, a forceful quality, boldness, effrontery, or agitation caused by fear, anxiety, or stress (as in nervousness). Basically what you are talking about is a mix of semantics. You are taking the meaning literally, where it isn't supposed to be. That saying originated basically from the courage definition, boldness, fortitude, effrontery. Its saying that you are strong or bold in saying that or asking that question. Its a quality, not a thing. Maybe it originated because people who got nervous were thought to not have nerves, where people who were more likely to be bold had strong nerves.
