Often, they don't like it and/or agree with it.
-
usually it wasnt what they wanted to hear
-
Telling someone the truth doesn't excuse telling them in a destructive or hurtful manner. Usually the way the truth is delivered dictates the person's response to a large degree.
-
The truth can hurt.
-
Because somewhere deep inside they may not be ready for it. It's like that saying "Be careful what you wish for". I agree with AntigoneRising, they way it is delivered has a lot to do with it as well.
-
Because truth hurts
-
"The truth...You can't handle the truth"
-
Because its the plain truth, and it really, really, really hurts.
-
It might not be " the truth",but the offenders subjective opinion of the truth. For example while some people expressing negative views of other people's religion see themselves as only presenting " the truth". The members of that religion see it as an attack upon their faith. And are offended.
-
I have more important things to do than run every comment I make thru "spell check". Do you think you have never misspelled a word.
-
Because the truth means change - And change is a hard thing to do -
-
truth in regard to a person can be subjective. I have had people tell me the truth about me that is completely wrong, yet they believe it. so be careful that what you are saying is the truth and not just your perception of it. secondly, not all truth needs to be told. If you are visiting a friend with a new baby and it is an ugly child, you don't say "Your baby looks like a monkey." You smile and coo and make a fuss and pray silently that it gets prettier as it grows.LOL thirldy, some people get offended at the truth because they do not want to believe that they are other than how they perceive themselves. I had to tell someone how badly they made me feel once, someone close. They were mortally offended, and moved state to get away from me. A couple of years later there was a reconciliation with the tacit admission that I had been right. So, there you are. SEveral reasons why some people get offended when they hear the truth.
-
I find that, rather than being offended, most people deny the truth. It's easy to say "No, that can't be." than to try to rework your thoughts around some new piece of information.
-
the truth doesn't hurt,if anything,it brings a relief. the only people that get offended when they hear the truth are the ones telling the lies. i should also mention some people lie due to ignorance and hearing the truth thereafter doesn't hurt.
-
Most of the time they disagree with it, and dont want to accept something that they believe as being false.
-
Sometimes because they know you're right they just dont want to admit it.
-
The truth hurts. either because of the subject or the way it is delivered, most cases it hurts. another reason people might get offended is if you hold off on them and wait to tell them the truth. if you don't tell them right away it is understandable to be offended.
-
I think the answer ties in with a lot of different factors. I have heard that if you could tell a person everything they need to know to have a happy life, that truthful information would drive them insane. People respond in different ways to truth. Most do not want to hear or discuss anything that conflicts with their deepest core beliefs. Truth does hurt. The freedom from self delusion is worth the price.
-
people should be glad to hear the truth
-
Because they cope by deluding themselves and living in a fantasy world. Which is usually a nicer place!
-
Because they refuse to accept the truth.
-
They don't want to really hear the truth - They only want you to tell them what they want to hear
-
Unfortunately many people do not like to hear or more than hear, take responsibility for and admit the "truth." This is of course when the truth is not "pleasant" to hear. When it is a huge compliment or positive, almost everyone is delighted to hear it! Bottom line is hearing or reading "the truth" hurts some people's egos, and sometimes brings them down from their pedestal. As Jack Nicholson said in a movie once, "You can't handle the truth!" And that is the truth for many people.
-
Because maybe what you consider the truth is not their truth, People come at problems from different standpoints and we never really know their problems or how they feel.
-
In a lot of cases the truth is telling someone their wrong. No matter who you are you can't say you like being told your wrong.
-
Some poople can't be wrong, it all has to do with their ego.
-
Because the truth usually hurts. People usually like to be lied to, they like the lie better than the truth because it is nice and a lot easier to take.
-
Truth never change. It is eternal. But people get offended if truth is not according to their line of thinking.
-
The truth may not be what they wish to hear.
-
People only want to hear what they want to hear..not the truth.
-
Because most people live in some form of denial of the truth. They get offended when they are reminded of the truth, because it makes them feel bad about avoiding or denying it. Truth is not cruel. Truth is not mean. Truth is not unkind. Truth is merely real.
-
Because your truth is not the same as their truth and it probably wasn't what they wanted to hear.
-
I think it's because people can be downright rude or too blunt when the tell the truth. People can be honest but considerate at the same time. I know I hate people that say things that are "true" for no good reason, like hurtful things. And then they say how people hate them because they're real. It's not because people don't like the truth, but because there's no good reason to say insulting things just because you can.
-
I don't get offended when I hear the truth. I get offended when people are unable to apply or present the truth.

Buddha once said, "No one person can ever change the truth, but the truth, once learned, can and will change the person." After many years of struggling to pass on his teacher's wisdom, one of Buddha's first followers returned to ask Buddha, "Master, why is it always the same, man or woman, young or old, it is always easy to package dung and sell lies expensively, yet it seems near impossible to give away freely, the truth." Buddha just smiled and said, "The hardest gift to give, yet the one most needed is wisdom." __________ Here is a poem by Shel Silverstien that also makes this point. The Perfect High - a poem by Shel Silverstein There once was a boy named Gimme-Some-Roy... He was nothin' like me or you, 'cause laying back and getting high was all he cared to do. As a kid, he sat in the cellar...sniffing airplane glue. And then he smoked banana peels, when that was the thing to do. He tried aspirin in Coca-Cola, he breathed helium on the sly, and his life became an endless search to find the perfect high. But grass just made him wanna lay back and eat chocolate-chip pizza all night, and the great things he wrote when he was stoned looked like shit in the morning light. Speed made him wanna rap all day, reds laid him too far back, Cocaine-Rose was sweet to his nose, but the price nearly broke his back. He tried PCP, he tried THC, but they never quite did the trick. Poppers nearly blew his heart, mushrooms made him sick. Acid made him see the light, but he couldn't remember it long. Hash was a little too weak, and smack was a lot too strong. Quaaludes made him stumble, booze just made him cry, Then he heard of a cat named Baba Fats who knew of the perfect high. Now, Baba Fats was a hermit cat...lived high up in Nepal, High on a craggy mountain top, up a sheer and icy wall. "Well, hell!" says Roy, "I'm a healthy boy, and I'll crawl or climb or fly, Till I find that guru who'll give me the clue as to what's the perfect high." So out and off goes Gimme-Some-Roy, to the land that knows no time, Up a trail no man could conquer, to a cliff no man could climb. For fourteen years he climbed that cliff...back down again he'd slide . . . He'd sit and cry, then climb some more, pursuing the perfect high. Grinding his teeth, coughing blood, aching and shaking and weak, Starving and sore, bleeding and tore, he reaches the mountain peak. And his eyes blink red like a snow-blind wolf, and he snarls the snarl of a rat, As there in repose, and wearing no clothes, sits the god-like Baba Fats. "What's happenin', Fats?" says Roy with joy, "I've come to state my biz . . . I hear you're hip to the perfect trip... Please tell me what it is. "For you can see," says Roy to he, "I'm about to die, So for my last ride, tell me, how can I achieve the perfect high?" "Well, dog my cats!" says Baba Fats. "Another burned out soul, Who's lookin' for an alchemist to turn his trip to gold. It isn't in a dealer's stash, or on a druggist's shelf... Son, if you would find the perfect high, find it in yourself." "Why, you jive mother-fucker!" says Roy, "I climbed through rain and sleet, I froze three fingers off my hands, and four toes off my feet! I braved the lair of the polar bear, I've tasted the maggot's kiss. Now, you tell me the high is in myself? What kinda shit is this? My ears, before they froze off," says Roy, "had heard all kindsa crap; But I didn't climb for fourteen years to hear your sophomore rap. And I didn't climb up here to hear that the high is on the natch, So you tell me where the real stuff is, or I'll kill your guru ass!" "Okay...okay," says Baba Fats, "You're forcin' it outta me... There is a land beyond the sun that's known as Zabolee. A wretched land of stone and sand, where snakes and buzzards scream, And in this devil's garden blooms the mystic Tzutzu tree. Now, once every ten years it blooms one flower, as white as the Key West sky, And he who eats of the Tzutzu flower shall know the perfect high. For the rush comes on like a tidal wave...hits like the blazin' sun. And the high? It lasts forever, and the down don't never come. But, Zabolee Land is ruled by a giant, who stands twelve cubits high, And with eyes of red in his hundred heads, he awaits the passer-by. And you must slay the red-eyed giant, and swim the river of slime, Where the mucous beasts await to feast on those who journey by. And if you slay the giant and beasts, and swim the slimy sea, There's a blood-drinking witch who sharpens her teeth as she guards the Tzutzu tree." "Well, to hell with your witches and giants," says Roy, "To hell with the beasts of the sea-- Why, as long as the Tzutzu flower still blooms, hope still blooms for me." And with tears of joy in his sun-blind eyes, he slips the guru a five, And crawls back down the mountainside, pursuing the perfect high. "Well, that is that," says Baba Fats, sitting back down on his stone, Facing another thousand years of talking to God, alone. "Yes, Lord, it's always the same...old men or bright-eyed youth... It's always easier to sell 'em some shit than it is to give them the truth."

The truth hurts the pride and therefore the reaction is to protect, the best form of protection is anger or attack!
-
For some people, handling the truth is hard because they may have to face things about themselves that they dont' want to admit or realize. They probably know already and just don't want to face it.
-
it has a lot to do how people say the truth. my sister has a way of being brutally honest to the point where she's rude. a little bit of cushion helps. being honest is good but it's also important to know when you cross the line. tell the truth but consider the other person feelings as well.

In literature it's called "The willful suspension of disbelief," and in psychology it's called "Cognitive Dissonance."
