Why are the commercials so much louder than the dialogue on TV shows/movies? Is it so you can hear them in the bathroom, where we all go when the commercials come on?

I would LOVE to know this. I bought a TV specifically because it had automatic volume control and it STILL didn't control the commercial volume. I am glad yo asked this Q. I can't wait to see the answers!

maybe it is a conspiracy to make sure you hear them.. i can totally see that being true.. advertisers will do just about anything to get their products sold.. this wouldnt be very far fetched

I dont know, but it drives me crazy and scares the hell out of me sometimes!!!! One minute you are trying to hear them whisper in a movie, the next minute, its like the world exploded, when a commercial comes on. I have seriously been trying think of a way to be able to mute commercials automatically. -
they are louder so it grabs our so called attetion to the tube.
