It would only be distasteful if a Republican had said it. Remember: Democrats=Love; Republicans=Hate.
-
Unbelievable how everything Obama says or does gets twisted to discredit him!
-
It was in horrible taste, but unfortunately I expect no better from him. He showed himself to be utterly insensitive and completely lacking in compassion, as I have said ever since he burst on the scene.

Yes, it was in poor taste and was disrespectful in the extreme. Instead of a racist joke, his target was the mentally challenged. Not very nice. I can see why he needs a teleprompter.
-
Distasteful? Perhaps. Funny - yes. My son bowls in the special olympics, and his average is in the 120's as a matter of fact. He was quite pleased that he had something in common with the president. All of the above is true - but now my real answer: The President is a human being. He lives in the unfortunate world where every single word he speaks will be analyzed, and respoken until someone manages to escalate it into verbal warfare, or a complete shun on an entire race/creed/ability level of people. Do all of our leaders speak eloquently, and with 100% class all of the time? Nope. They are people too. I didn't vote for the man, and, in hindsight - I wouldn't change the way I voted if I had it to do over again - however, he is my president and I will support him. I will start by not making a Federal case every time he sneaks a cigarette, drinks a cold beer and holds his bowling ability at a Special Olympics level. He has important work to do and I don't want to waste his time.

Of course it was,but they'll try to place the blame on his teleprompter ;)
-
Marginally distasteful AT best.. Get a life..
-
Since he was pointing to his own ineptitude rather than making fun of the handicapped, I'd say people are overreacting.
-
I think it was in poor taste - and really a man in his position ought to have thought about what he was saying a little more. Interestingly, the Special Olympics website opens with a line: Be a fan of dignity. http://www.specialolympics.org/ I am glad that they at least have retained their dignity!

It is a figure of speach that I have heard on many occasions. If his intent was to poke fun at the kids of ths special olympics it would have definetly be wrong. His intent was not to make fun of the special olympics but to make fun of himself. I am so incredilby tierd of the standards of political correctness that members of our society try to impose on us. We look at comments in an attempt to find fault, to prove that the person making the comment is somehow less moral or less respectful of others. The truth is our perceptions of the things we see and hear are and always will be affected by our personal experiences. If you already have a negative opion of someone you are looking for the negative. If you are looking to lay blame or find fault in others you will find it. If you are looking for the good in people you will see that. It's human nature.
-
Yeah, no doubt about it, it was the wrong thing to say. His intent was self deprecating humor, which in my opinion (the ability to laugh at oneself) is a good quality in anyone. Unfortunately, it was a poor choice for comparison, and it was obvious to me that he regretted it the second he said it. Fortunately both men had the good sense to let it go; as any attempt to clean it up, would only have made it worse. I don't know yet whether this guy's the real deal or not, but I won't make that determination based on something so trivial, and something I know I've done myself, on numerous occasions.

First, I would like to ask a question. When will people accept that the majority of handicapped people want to be treated just like everyone else? The want to be cared for, loved, respected, joked with, and yes, joked about. My partner's cousin has CP. He's a sweet kid and he loves it when people are able to just be themselves around him. He jokes with his family and teases them and they tease him right back. Secondly, Obama was not poking fun at the Special Olympics. He was poking fun at himself. He was saying that his performance is no better than someone who has a disability that would limit their ability to perform well in the sport (they have an "excuse" per se, whereas he does not). If I said that I had the math skills of a 2nd grader, that would not be degrading or demeaning 2nd graders for their lack of mathematical abilities, which are, of course, understandable. It would be making fun of myself for not being better at it than they are.

Obama should cut any funding of special olympic bowling so as to reduce their scores while he practices in the white house. Then in a year his teleprompter can invite some special olympian bowlers to the White House for a bowling match so he won't look, as he so eloquently put it, like a special olympian. Sort of like a fairness doctrine for White House bowlers who want to have their scores seen too. Here he is with his bowling partners, fr. phleger rev.jerimiah wright and of course your own bowling for columbine pro michael moore http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20090320/Obama.Special.Olympics/
