Does heavy criticism of an offensive speech or idea make an adequate substitute for censorship?

I'm absolutely against censorship of anything. Criticize all you want.

It would seem at first reading that is a reasonable alternative. However, too many people try to pass off bigotry and hatred as criticism, and there are not many people who are capable of knowing reasoned criticism when they see it. In my opinion, most people prefer to be led rather have to make decisions and choices based on logic.
