  • An Anti-Mormon is anyone who publishes or posts any false information about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, KNOWINGLY. Unfortunately many sincere people often post information from Christian or Catholic websites about the church of Jesus Christ, not knowing that the information is not true. They trust their sources, not realizing they would lie just to discourage anyone from investigating the LDS Church. I know this because I have attempted to correct some things which I found to be incorrect, and was told they did not care it their information was accurate or not. They said their only purpose in posting about the Church was to discourage anyone from even investigating the Church, and if they had to lie to do it, they will do what ever it takes...whew4
  • Technically: Additionally An Anti-Mormon is someone who is an Ex-mormon who won't keep his mouth shut. http://www.exmormon.org/
  • An anti-Mormon is someone who is identified as being anti-Mormon instead of pro-(something else). An anti-Mormon rarely cares if what they are spreading is true.
  • An anti-Mormon (in the old days) was someone who was against the Mormon faith and culture (for whatever reason). Today however, it is a label given to ANYONE who opposes the CoJCoLDS on ANY level. This label is usually meant to demean ANYONE who questions ANYTHING regarding the integrity of the 'Church' and is usually thrown around with as much tact as "Nazi" or "facist" with an equal amount of understanding. I would personally fall into the category of "anti-mormon" because I refuse to be a good little lemming and choose to think for myself. There are two good extra-Biblical quotes that convey my "anti-"ness: "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use." -- Galileo Galilei "Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not to their own facts. Differences ought not to keep us from carrying the truth to everyone." --Ravi Zacharias
  • SHORT ANSWER: =============== No one seems to know any more - not even faithful and practicing LDS Scholars. However, everyone agrees that True Believing Mormons (TBMs) use the term far too loosely. It's been observed that they use the term as an "Information Control" or "Thought Stopping" technique per Steven Hassan's BITE Model. That is, once they label a person or a piece of evidence "Anti-Mormon" they feel like that they don't have to deal with it/them any more and they can just ignore it/them. Or can rush to the nearest LDS Apologist source to defuse their cognitive dissonance. LONG ANSWER: ============== USING "ANTI-MORMON LABELING AS A THOUGHT STOPPING TECHNIQUE: TBM "Anti-Mormon" labeling is a form of "Information Control" specifically utilizing the following techniques: II. Information Control 2. Access to non-cult sources of information minimized or discouraged a. Books, articles, newspapers, magazines, TV, radio b. Critical information c. Former members d. Keep members so busy they don't have time to think 3. Compartmentalization of information; Outsider vs. Insider doctrines a. Information is not freely accessible b. Information varies at different levels and missions within pyramid c. Leadership decides who "needs to know" what 5. Extensive use of cult generated information and propaganda [NOTE: Used to counter balance "Anti-Mormon" claims and evidence - just think "LDS Apologists" as you read this section] a. Newsletters, magazines, journals, audio tapes, videotapes, etc. b. Misquotations, statements taken out of context from non-cult sources http://www.freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/articles/BITE.htm You can see how ExMormons have applied the full BITE Model to Mormonism here: http://www.rationalrevelation.com/library/bite.html http://www.freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/groups/m/mormon/BITE-Mormonism.htm For example, here's how ExMormon and Cult Exit Counselor Luna Flesher analyzed how "Emotional Control" is applied in Mormonism: c. Historical guilt ...Members feel Mormon history is above reproach. 4. Excessive use of fear b. Fear of the "outside" world This is a common side-effect for many Mormons, especially those who have been born into the church and sheltered all their lives. Satan is alive and well, and doing his best to lead away the elect. He's especially working hard on Mormons, so it's really easy to be tempted. "We are in the world, but not of the world" is a popular Mormon quote. c. Fear of enemies Satan is still persecuting the Church. Stories are told of the early Church where Mormons were killed for their beliefs (supposedly unprovoked). Anti-Mormons and apostates are still working to destroy the Church. This very document would be considered such an attack. NOTE: Can the reader see how "Anti-Mormon Labeling" is just an extension of these Emotional Control techniques? And on Thought Stopping here what Ms. Flesher had to say about one "Thought Stopping" technique: 4. Thought-stopping techniques (to shut down "reality testing" by stopping "negative" thoughts and allowing only "good" thoughts); rejection of rational analysis, critical thinking, constructive criticism. a. Denial, rationalization, justification, wishful thinking If confronted with critical material, a Mormon will become defensive or respond irrationally, such as "I know it's true!", "They're liars!", or "Don't test my faith!". Members are taught to accept things on faith. Apologists believe they are responding rationally, but they employ logical fallacies and fantastical theories. NOTE: 'nuff said! I mean, come on, some Mormons even labeled Gordon B. Hinckley an "Anti-Mormon" for his statements denouncing LDS mistreatment of non-Mormons in Utah in his 2001 Pioneer Day address.... ....Now if you REALLY want to explore this vital question I recommend that you consider the following from your peer LDS: SL03332, Panel. After the publication of Great Basin Kingdom, author Leonard Arrington learned the Churchhistorian's office had categorized it as an "anti- Mormon" book because they had determined it was not decidedly "pro-Mormon." Over the years, many people have been quick to label everyone professional critics who are dedicated to bringing people out of Mormonism? Do Leonard Arrington, Fawn Brodie, Sunstone, Sterling McMurrin, D. Michael Quinn, Ed Decker, and Dialogue deserve to be placed side by side? https://www.sunstonemagazine.com/audio/SL03332.mp3 SL96373, WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE EVANGELICAL 'ANTI-MORMON' MOVEMENT? https://www.sunstonemagazine.com/audio/SL96373.mp3
  • Upon reflection, here is my second more precise and "real world" answer to this question: An "Anti-Mormon" is anyone - LDS or non-LDS - who says something, or presents evidence that I, as a Mormon, don't like, or don't want to accept as factual, true, or correct. And since this is a completely subjective, evaluative judgment, one Latter Day Saint's "Anti-Mormon" is another Latter Day Saint's "Sage".
  • An anti-Mormon is someone identified by their hatred of Mormonism instead of zeal for their own faith. An anti-Mormon is distinguished from other critics by his / her motives.
