I went to the hardware store to get a new trap for the bathroom sink. I took the old trap with me to make sure I got the correct size. I bought one that looked the same but the short end of the new one just doesn't reach the down pipe. What should I do?

Go exchange it with one that fits or get an extension piece.

I'd take it back and get one that would reach OR .. You could just get an extension and be sure to have your plumbers putty on hand.

They make universal kits that come with everything you need except the hacksaw to cut the extension tube to the right size. These cost about $5 at Home Depot. Get one of those, and don't use plumbers putty. That's for installing drains and sinks to counter-tops it's got nothing to do with replacing a p-trap.
