Yes, my dog does the same. I've always assumed it helps them "wiggle" their excrement out.

Yes, mine starts walking if he suddenly decides there's something else he wants to do (usually go bark at someone).

This Q proves that some people are more easily amused than others... I rest my case.

I think they are spreading the poo around that way. By walking while they go, there's a little poo here and a little poo there instead of in one big pile. It's another way of spreading their scent to make sure other animals know they were here and this spot belongs to them now.

Ours don't "walk", but "squat-walk". I think it helps them get things "moving" (usually it's after the first part drops, but there's more there, or NOTHING has dropped). Our dogs only get dried food, and occasional snacks and small bits of people food. Maybe they need more "wet" food. A gross, but interesting question. LOL ;-)
