A chauvinist is just someone who believes in the superiority of their own kind, and this superiority may or may not refer to gender. A sexist believes in the superiority of their own gender.

In my opinion a sexist is someone who makes inappropriate comments with no thought or regard to who they hurt. A chauvinist makes those comments for the express purpose of making themselves feel better by making others feel less than important
