• Western morality can actually be traced back to ancient Greece, which forms the bases of Western Philosophy, with their ideas of not killing, stealing etc and their political system, although much has changed today. But where did the Greeks get their morals from? In fact where did our entire species get it's morals from? Religion seems unlikely, more likely is that religion merely reiterated what was commonly believed anyway, and added a few more in like "no Gods before me". For example, other species of primates display morals, some will condem those who kill others in their troop, and gorillas are surprisingly critical of 'adultary'. Morals make sense from an evolutionary stance, and indeed they have evolved over time. For example, today Christians don't take the part of the Bible that says kill all homosexuals, atheists, blasphomers etc as literal. So the decision of what is literal and what a metaphore must be based on a underlying preconseption of what is right and wrong.

• Time will correct your opinion. Look at the avowed atheists. They outnumber the Christians. Throughout the site, atheists are a very outspoken group, most tolerant, others not so. You will find lots of company here. "Zeal" is never in short supply. Ironically, the atheists seem drawn to the religion section when you'd think there'd be nothing but apathy.

Much more satisfying than brief oneliners. ...I don't know "CACTUSBIN", the asker, so don't know his agenda. But in the area of religion, there are a lot of "trick questions" from both sides of the issue.
  Knowing the asker is a real help in determining motive.

• "atheist" just means you aren't a "theist" (someone who worships a deity) - so if you don't hold that belief, you are an atheist!

• I actually hold the opposite view: if you allow for the possible existence of a Deity then you are a theist, not an atheist.

• I think it's an absurd position to take, since it goes against every other example of the suffix's usage in the language. Do you have any other examples where "-ism" or "-ist" includes even the acknowledgement of a remote possibility of the root, rather than specifically affirmative? I can't think of one, but surely a master linguist such as yourself will have one off the top of your head.

• I wish someone would come up with a better name than atheist! it is confusing sometimes. hell, some people can't even spell it! A lot of the time I go by ''free thinker'', but that doesn't quite cut it either! Put on your thinking caps , and maybe we can find something a little more original, and spellable!! and yes, I just made up a new word, so sue me!

• What your implying is that there was only one chance for a universe to be created, by chance it was, but there were millions of opportunities for it to happen, it was more likely than not eventually to happen.
