Question

Help answer this question below.

I'm fairly new here and while I have given out points, I'm reluctant to downrate anyone. When do you, personally, downrate someone? I assume for not answering the question would be a fair reason to take points away, but not for an answer we disagree with?

I think it would be a little harsh to take points of someone for not answering your question to you liking.
You don't ever have to downrate anyone it's your choice.
I don't like taking points of people - I'd much rather give them.

I don't downrate. I've been insulted in some answers here, but I have not downrated those. I just don't give any points.

    I never DR.

You will find that most of the people that have been here a while, DR very seldom and then only for really nasty things.

If they do not like an answer they just ignore it or leave a comment saying they disagree.

Not giving points for things is a more effective way than taking away points other people think an answer deserves.

In fact DRating does not really remove points from a persons total, just a large number of DRs can affect a persons percentages but not points.

I *never* downrate. But that's just me.

However, if I find a question or an answer spam/offensive or nonsense, I flag them accordingly. But I am also cautious with flagging. For instance, I would not flag something that looks like a question but that I don't understand. It must be *really* nonsensical. And I know what I am talking about, 14 of my questions were rejected as nonsense...and personally, I would not have considered them as such!

And if I notice a user who is only posting spam questions, I report them to the staff with the feedback feature.

The only time I downrate is when I see an answer that I consider offensive and I will leave a comment sating why I did so.

The only time I will downrate someone is if they either have posted an answer that is abusive, or they have posted a question that is in bad taste. As Stableboy said if you do downrate someone in the comment section just state why. It doesn't matter weather they agree with you or not, I believe the best answers come from a combination of all the responses to a question.

Sometimes I will down-rate an answer for a variety of reasons. Mostly I just ignore answers I disagree with, but if -- for example -- an answer to an important question is dangerous or misleading, I may rate it down.

One thing that's very important is to always leave a comment identifying yourself. To me, this is an important part of providing critical feedback for others: they know where to come if they want to respond, and identifying myself and telling them what I don't like about their answer offers at least some courtesy and respect -- that I consider them a human being worthy of knowing who disagrees strongly enough to rate their answer down.

I think I've downrated maybe 10 q and/or a's since I've been here. At this point, I can't think of hardly ANYTHING that would cause me to DR anyone. I get enough crap DRs that I wouldn't want anyone to think they were being trolled or something.

If you find a question spam or offensive or nonsense (and you should go by category here - SOME people don't put game names, movie names, etc., assuming the cateogy will cover it) flag it. Otherwise, let it go. Same with an answer.

Remember... Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, no matter how stupid or wrong they are. ;-)

  • Simple. Uprate for helpful, downrate for unhelpful. Humour is usually helpful.
