Say, "I'm sorry that you experienced an inconvenience, but store policy doesn't allow us to accept returns after an item has been washed." If they continue to rant, tell them they may speak to the manager.

Take his name, address and telephone number. After work, go to his home and kill him.(You don't really need the phone number)

You follow store procedure, in a calm, even voice. If they persist, you state that you are sorry, but you do not have to take abuse. And that it is not your fault. Then you get your supervisor to take over.

Tell the person that's what woolite was made for! Just kidding! Apologize for the inconvenience and tell them you will get the manager to help them. Then call the manager and let him/her deal with it.

If you're the manager, you just shut up and give them their money back. There's not that many people who act like this and it shuts them up and they go away.
