Personally I feel it takes the guess work out of what to wear every day, which is great! I know alot of youths are against it, but when you think about it, not all children come from the same financial backgrounds and it can be hard growing up not having all of the brand names and such. So with uniforms you can take that out of the rest of your stresses as all are equal. We had to wear uniforms at my schools and I personally had no problems with it... although making us wear skirts in -25 degree weather was not so great!

I think it's ideal in an environment where your clothing is an issue. Where people are in danger of being beat up for their shoes, etc. I've never attended a school with uniforms, but it wouldn't have bothered me.
-
i dont mind them, but i think they are not needed...kids go to school to learn, the type of clothes they're wearing doesnt make a difference. i do agree that there should be rules on how short your skirts and your shirts are and stuff like that, but uniforms are not needed. it is not kool when you have to wear a skirt to school when it's 10 degrees out side...and one more point, uniforms are a waste of money.

Uniforms are supposed to make all children easily identifiable, plus it makes them all equal, so there is no hierarchy as to whose parents can afford the designer clothes as opposed to whose cannot etc. I hated my uniform when I was at school, not because I wanted to wear my own clothes, but purely because it was so uncomfortable. The day I left school I went into my garden and burned the whole lot in a bonfire. I felt much better after that.

I think school uniforms are a necessity. I'm not saying I want to take away a student's right to wear what they want, but some clothing these days goes beyond acceptable limits for what is appropriate. Some students also feel left out or suffer immense damage to their self-esteem when they see a peer wearing an outfit that they want, or that they think would not look good on them. I think one of the most damaging things about school is the discouraging feelings some kids get from their peers, specifically relating to self-image, etc. School uniforms take a lot of the distractions out of the school day, that's for sure...

I think they are an excellent thing. it starts all children off on a level footing. The children that come from poorer homes do not have the pressure of never having the latest designer clothes. It also gives them a sense of identity, of being a part of a school community

I hated school uniforms and i hate get yelled at if i didnt tuck my shirt in and all that crap.Ive always hated dressing up and i still do now.

Equality and bullying is what it comes down to. Kids can be very harsh sometimes and if one kid's parents can't afford the latest fad, or if a kid lives on hand-me-downs it can lead to them being very miserable. Granted this is just in a minority of cases, but it still happens, so why not stamp it out in such an easy an effective way?

I used to hate them but I now see why they are beneficial. First off, you don't spend an hour wondering what you're going to wear, Second, the first day of high school, you are put into "groups" according to what you wear (you don't see thugs hanging out with gothic people)(or plastics hanging out with EMOs). Third, usually they are less expensive on the long run, because you only need about 3 or 4 uniforms rather than 2 closets full of clothes. 4th principals don't have to worry about suspending students for wearing obscene or revealing clothing 5th..well this is just an opinion i like those little school uniforms on girls i think they're hot EDIT: and yeah I think it gives a chance for students to be looked upon by their personalities and intelligence rather than their fashion I don't know if it's like this everywhere but the "hott" girls who were good make up, expensive clothing and did their hair good and wore booty skirts....are usually able to bribe the insecure male teachers more easily than me...like from anything from grades to going to the bathroom to getting excused for being late..and I'm a guy...I wonder how a poor, not well groomed feels when she can't get the priveleges another woman gets...it's kinda like discrimination if you ask me

well at my school we had a blue uniform and we had to wear a blazer aswell. i absolutley hated it. i never used to wear my blazer or tuck my shirt in and i was forever getting told off for it. one of the reasons we have uniforms is so that everyone is the same and noone gets bullied for being different so its a good idea because of that reason but other than that i cant think of any good reasons for horrible school uniforms

Complete utter loathing, but I'm biased: My school uniform was long songs with garters, hard black school shoes, short shorts, kinda-formal t-shirt, boater & blazer... Honestly, I spent 8 years of my life not only looking like a d**k, but being forced to wear clothes which were really rough and stiff, way too hot (Australian weather = hot or cold in winter, very hot and very humid in summer)... Seriously, I had blisters regularly from the shoes, had to shower as soon as I got home everyday from the sweat, even if it wasn't a very hot day, the boater (its like a hard straw hat thing...) was too tight and gave headaches to a lot of people on hot days... WHY do schools have uniforms anyway? It's just a way of diminishing the individuality of the students... :/

I think they could be good for certain reasons, but I would not want to be told that I had to wear certain things everyday. They can be good because they make everyone look equal despite what clothes their parents can afford to buy them. Also, it would keep people from wearing inappropriate clothes that break the dress codes, which are not enforced well enough at some schools.

Yes, Uniforms give a sense of belonging, also not all parents can afford the latest trainers and designer tops that kids like, uniforms help keep everyone equal.
-
yes because everyone is the same and then noone can be bullied for the clothes they choose to wear or the clothes they cannot afford. uniforms look smart as well even though i thought different when i was at school.

I believe they are. But, I believe they should be furnished for free. Everyone given 3 free uniforms, and if they wanted more, they could pay for them themselves. I think it makes schools at least a LITTLE bit safer, because, for the most part, if someone does not have a uniform, they probably should not be there. And, like the other answers, kids don't compete by wearing fancier and more expensive clothes. But, something does have to be done about the cost. I could clothe my kids in jeans and shirts for a lot less than the cost of these uniforms. That's why I think, if they are to be required, at least some of them should be free, (at least 2 days worth).

I think school uniforms are a misguided effort to minimize the amount of disruption in the schools. It would make a lot more sense to simply provide enough personnel to handle the students.

Very bad. Bullies always find something. The main problem is bullying, which shall be stopped and not hidden.

for 94% of kids, school uniforms have marginal effects. it probably does reduce some of the minor disruptions in class that are related to individualism. there are 6% ish who might be influenced fairly substantially by the wearing of school uniforms - gang members and kids likely to grow into gang members. for these kids, the reaching out and including them in a pro-social uniforms program can reduce gang membership and can reduce the pride or patriotism that comes with gang membership. if, on the third hand, you're talking about those nasty ugly things that squish individualism and encourage thoughtless compliance, then, i'm against it. i've more than run out of hands here, and i'd better quit !!!

I'm against uniforms. Most of the time, they are ugly and uncomfortable. The idea of looking just like everyone else doesn't appeal to me. Uniforms don't stop bullying, as bullies just find something else to pick on.
