  • You need to find something that really hooks you (for me it was poker). If you do that, the rest is automatic. You will automatically have direction in your life. And, automatically be motivated. Also, everything else in your life will be much easier to manage since it will all be structured around that one main thing.
  • Volunteer: Big Brother/Sister, United Way, working with developmentally disabled children, help veterans recovering from war wounds ... Find someone whose circumstances are worse than yours and give freely of yourself and your time. You'll do some good for others and maybe gain some perspective on what you want to do with your own future.
  • See if your local job center has an interest inventory. That's a test you take that helps you figure out what jobs would suit you, based on your interests and attitudes.
  • Many time once people discover a passion in life they are able to focus on it and acquire a better direction for their life. I would suggest you investigate things you really enjoy being involved with and see where it might take you. Good luck. It isn't easy and you are not alone. I once knew a man who failed all through high school but his parents kept pushing him to go back. He finally made it to university and discovered archeology. He is one of the worlds foremost Egyptian archeologists now.
