Depends on the reason for the exam...an exam should be a test of the knowledge a student has retained to date, not just to satisfy state mandates. BTW...read your profile, sounds like you are a great mom!

No one will believe this but school itself is not even necassary for kids. read a book called "your most dangerous idea", or something like that. it was one of the ideas and it made sense to me. I know, i know, you dont agree, but check it out. i dont know if theres stuff online about it.

Yes... I think so. The ones the teachers give are to test what the student has learned and retained. The ones the state give are to verify that students ARE learning. By the same token, they should NOT be used to close down a school, or decide if that school should get money, but to find the schools or teachers who may need more training.

honestly? no..I think exams are just ways for schools to deal with 1 teacher trying to teach 30 students. If we spent more on education we could have 1 teacher for every 10 students, and we would not need exams...because all exams do is test how well you memorize given material. A student learns to memorize who chopped down the cherry tree but there is never discussion on why. What we end up with is adults who have a head full of trivial knowledge and no idea what it means or how it applies to our pasts, present or future. In a smaller classroom setting, there would be more time for discussion, understanding and teachers could grade students on their true understanding, their evaluation and insight into topics as well as their participation..teachers would have the abiltiy to give more hands on teaching and speak with students instead of AT them. Of course in America we are more concerned with fighting wars and building prisons more than educating our youth and these kids have grown up and look at education for their kids as nothing more than "pass the test" 6 hour daycare sessions.

While the exam results may not be a true reflection of the student's talents and abilities - exams continue to be a necessary evil. We must have some method of finding out the progress the student is making in his studies. Until such time a new system is worked out for assessing a student's progress - there is no way other than conducting periodical exams.
-
No they are not needed. They only put pressure on students. They put pressure on them to do better than their best, and so does not reflect their progress and abilities. It baisically is just testing their memory. In my opinion tests are like a broken pencil... pointless.
-
Yes, they are, because it shows how well you react to pressure.
