  • With guitar you need 2 things. Practice, and patience. If you could give more info I could help you more. It could be that you aren't making the chord shape properly. It could be your strumming too hard or have really bad timing. Maybe your strings need to be changed. Maybe this video will help http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAnIV0tMtrU
  • The best way to learn rhythm is to play along with CDs or the radio that will give you the idea of strumming.
  • Play along with a simple metronoe. No amp, just you the guitar and the metronoe. Close your eyes, feel the rythm and go with it.
  • Getting your strums to sound professional involve a technique I refer to as "scratching." I have heard other people call it "chucking." It involves a series of down and up strums where some of the strums strike the notes of the chord causing it to ring out, and other strums strike the strings as they are being muted, causing a percussive "scratching" sound. The combination of the two will make your strumming sound more rhythmic. The trick is where to place the scratches, and also whether to mute the strings with your left hand or your right hand. I have placed two handouts on my website to help you with this. The first one is just some strumming patterns to practice with. The second one explains the technique I've been talking about. Here are the links to the documents. Let me know if this helps. And, by the way, it doesn't happen overnight. If you practice at least five times a week, it could still take 2 or more weeks before you are satisfied with your strumming, and then it should keep getting better in time.
