I think that performance was so incredible he deserved it either way, but yes, I do think that his death made people support him winning more.

No. I honestly think Robert Downey Jr. would have won because he was seen as last years comeback celebrity.

Heath Ledger would have won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for sure, without a doubt, hands down, indoobidabbly.

No only would he have won, but he would have went on to win many more Oscars. He had a talent, and that talent was acting.

Honestly, if he didn't get it after he died, he definitely wouldn't have gotten it if he was still alive. Sadly, many times it takes the death of the person before their true talent is properly recognized.

Action and superhero roles are receiving more acknowledgement. Years ago, Sigourney Weaver was up for Best Actress for " Aliens. " And before that, in the the-usual-ignored horror genre -- both Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were up for Oscars for " Carrie. " [ And Silence of the Lambs opened the door to horror Oscars -- though I never found that movie a horror movie.] An action Oscar-winning role was bound to happen. And, my goodness, Ledger's performance goes beyond any genre limitations -- the guy deserved it. [ Though I agree with sentimentality playing a role in winners, the fact that Alfred Hitchcock never received an Oscar for Best Director proves that talent bordering on genius is sometimes "officially" ignored by Oscar. After Hitch with no Oscar, nothing surprises me ]
