What is the difference between an autobiography and a memoir? Can "memoirs" be used interchangeably with "memories"?

I think typically an autobiography is expected to tell the whole life story of the subject, focusing on how they became the person they are, etc. A memoir is usually focused on specific contexts: i.e. their time as President or what happened during the war, etc. It's more about the events than the person.

An autobiography is the whole life story/history of a person written by the person from own perspective. Memoirs are a collection of memories of the significant incidents in a person's life written by self. An autobiography will include a lot more information about the life of the person whereas a memoirs will confine itself to the important incidents of interest to others. The two are not interchangable.
