I suppose there was probably no other way to deal with it quickly. If it had already mauled someone then it may have only been a matter of time before it did so again, and it would be quicker to shoot it than waiting to locate the neccessary tranquilisers and get them to the scene.

It was in the process of attacking the cop who shot it. What other "ways" do you think were feasible?

Chimps are 4 times as strong as a powerful man. The police officer had a choice. Deadly force or likely death. This was a tragedy that never hould have happened. Chimpanzees are not house pets. It is illegal to treat them as such now because of too many instances like this. This one was allowed under a grandfathered clause.

Not only did it maul its owner, but the owner's friend. The chimp was treated as part of the family...ate at the family table, drank wine, etc. I don't think a chimpanzee should be in a regular neighborhood. It can live with a family, but in a place with not many neighbors. Children in that town could have also been attacked. I think it it's tragic, but they tried to subdue him first. I think the police should have called animal protection so they could sedate him before having to kill him. But at that moment, they went with their instincts.
