Two schools of thought that I'm aware of... The Classic version, taught in text books, is that Amerigo Vecpucchi discovered the Americas and that it was named after him. The Cult Version, discovered while rifling through arcana of one sort or another, indicates that it was part of a Masonic prophecy. As many of the original founding fathers were Masons they named the country after the name of the country in said prophecy.
