I fancy Greece this year. What's a good coastal town with good access to the historical stuff? Is it better to go Islands or Mainland?

In my opinion the mainland has a lot to offer and is less "touristy" (less crowded, cheaper etc). I would suggest Nafplion, the first capital of modern Greece.
