I am not sure where to find the actual record, but that incident would probably have happened during the Semiannual General Conference held in October 1857. Giving the content of the first speech, I would expect that it was given in the context of resisting the approaching army during the Utah War. The problem is finding a copy of the transcripts from that conference. I was once a Stake Librarian in a student stake a BYU. It seems to me that I remember seeing in our library text copies for all of the General Conferences, but I am not sure now if that collection was as complete as I think it was. Unfortunately, the Churches website doesn't seem to go back more than about 11 years with its transcripts from conferences.

I've heard that before a few times. Brigham Young said they would burn all the crop fields and destroy everything and leave it as dessolate as it was when they first settled there, so that US army would have nothing to take over. But then came revelation and he corrected himself. I hope someone finds the referance, I'd love to see it myself.

I've heard that story too but I can't find the original source (it's not in JoD - I've looked and looked for it). . So if someone could provide a citation that would be great.
