  • The 'butter' or grease is on the 'bottom'. This prevents the kernals from burning and scorching rather than popping. The popcorn will pop if you put the bag in 'upside down' -- but you will end up with more scorched kernals and less finished product. (don't know why someone DR'd your Q -- seems like a good, legitimate Q to me!)

  • It burns if you do it the wrong way. Been there, done that.
  • So the butter would drip on the popcorn while it was cooking instead of it just laying flat!
  • Microwaves will genorate steam BUT so you get Heat for browning there is a Foil strip that Absorbs the energy to get them going. same thing for microwave foods that have a pack that makes them Brown but the pack has that same strip on the top.
