I'm an atheist, and I do. I beleive that it's just a phrase, an exclamation.
-
I am an atheist, and I do say those things. I don't say "God willing" or "God bless you", though.
-
Same here. I was raised Catholic before I became a realist and therefore an aethiest. It's sort of built in.
-
I am atheist, and I do all the time. Why? I earnt my right to say it. It really gets to my dad, and I put up with a lot of bollocks from that man about it. I was never allowed to say it, so I do now I am away from him. It's now just a force of habit, but it feels good Edit: Indeed it is. You would be surprised how easy it is to have typos, especially when you are trying to learn how to type without looking at the keys whilst typing really fast. I'm learning though!
-
I'm Christian and I still say "holy cow," if in an area where it is not appropriate to say "holy crap." I cannot say from an atheist's point of view, but I do not worship cows.
-
I am an atheist and I do so ironically. My boyfriend is the same and says even more Catholic things like "if we are spared" and so forth. It's actually very funny to me.
-
Some don't, or try not to, but in general I would say that many (maybe most) atheists do use phrases like that. Even for theists, many of those type of phrases (like "God forbid!", "[God] Bless you!" and "God d--- it!")aren't taken literally and are just set phrases, usually expressing emotion. The same goes for many atheists. For many, it's just a habit, sometimes due to having used those phrases as theists previously, and many times just because they are common phrases in English.
-
Nope, I don't ever. Why would I?
-
I sure do. And if that doesn't work I say F' God. I'll probably panic and pray when the plane crashes also - doesn't make it right - just makes it a biological and social tendency.
-
Yes, and it annoys the bejesus out of me. oh, god damnit! d'oh! It's just a social convention. I don't turn green when I'm envious either.
-
Saying Jesus Christ, is fun. I don't say "God bless you" or such, mainly because it would kinda give credit to the thing I don't really want to support. As an exclamation is fine though!
-
Sure! And when I'm surprised, I also say quite a lot of other things my parents said while growing up, some of which (like "oh my god") I'd rather not repeat here in mixed company. We learn to say things as children which continue into adulthood regardless of how we change as adults. When surprised, we revert to the outbursts we learned as children, regardless of our current feelings about those words and phrases. Our values have changed, but our earliest knowledge remains.

I'm Atheist, and i say that and Goddamnit!
-
I an an agnostic, but I generally refrain from addressing any specific divine being by name. When someone sneezes, I say "Gesundheit". If a situation arises that would use OMG in an eye-rolling tone, I use "For f***'s sake". That said, I do occasionally make reference to Jesus in expletive form but usually on either a bicycle or as "Savior-on-a-stick". (If there is a Hell, I'm probably going there for that last one.)
-
Yes, "god" with a small "g". That could mean any one of them. I also just say "bless you" when someone sneezes, cuz you can get "blessings" from anyone at anytime.
-
Very seldom. I never say "Bless you" or "good bye" (=god be with you) either. "So long" or "cheerio" are better anyway.
-
My chinese friend is buddist and when he says: Oh my god, I correct him to: oh my Buddha. Its a joke, only.
-
If you're Christian, you're not *supposed* to be saying that =) hehe (Commandment number 3, I believe). But as for things like "God bless you" when someone sneezes, me and most of my friends who are also Christian will say it fast so it sounds like "G'bleshyoo." I have a friend who's atheist and she says every word perfectly, "God bless you." Go figure.
-
yes, because of the same reason anyone else says those things, it offends people and therefore expresses your feelings more powerfully
-
Most people even on the typewriter that are professed atheists, still type OH MY GOD, and similar epithets
-
Of course, it's just a saying, don't even know any other way of saying bless you when someone sneezes, has nothing to do with religion.
-
I'm not an atheist, but I'm not Christain either. I say it mostly out of habit. I do try to curtail my use if I'm around somebody it upsets for respect sake.
-
Yeah - It's a figure of speach, I guess. I don't mean it literally.

I was always taught not to do it. Taking the lord's name in vain and whatnot. So in kind of an irony to your question, I say it a lot more now than I did before I was an atheist. (Before: Never:: Now: once in awhile). But I'm much more partial to the s-word, when I'm mad. :D
-
I like "Great zombie Jesus!". I think I heard that on Futurama.
-
I often say Jesus Fucking Christ, or god damn it. They are just just words or expressions.
-
I try not to i rather say oh your god and if I'm talking to another atheist i say oh their god but its not a regular thing.
-
yes i say jesus, god, hell, etc all the time.
-
Sure, God is that thing that theists believe in. I say gosh and gee and damn but they are all just words. I've even repeated prayers to assuage others but attached no meaning.
-
Yes, I still say "Oh my God","bloody hell" and "Jesus Christ" no meaning to me other than the vernacular!
-
people drum these things into us wen were young so y cant we say it now that we atleast no wot it means.
-
The fact is that there are many cultural phrases out there in the real world!! 'Oh My God', is just one! I use that one often, because it explains my horror at something! Not that I expect some deity to solve the problem!! And more often than not I just say OMG!! Sometimes a cigar is just, a cigar!!!
-
I used to but I eventually got it out of my system.
