They try, but they get shouted down with everyone else who disagrees with the nut-cases. I've often wondered why average, decent Christians or Muslims don't stand forth against these types in light of the damage done to their religions by these people. It's always the nasties who get noticed ya know. Muslims I can kind of understand. In some places disagreeing with islamist fundamentalists can get you killed. But what about the rest of the world? I have friends, some just decent laypeople, others with actual, bona fide religious vocations who are horrified by christianists. But will they stand up and really tell it like it is? By the way, there are religious people who go beyond mere "semi-rational."

Arguing with a religious or political ideologue is generally pointless. They base their beliefs on an unshakable set of misinterpretations and lies. They will NEVER change their pet beliefs. The old saying is, "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It'll frustrate the heck out of you and annoy the pig."

I have family members that are very right-wing, Orthodox Jews. My father used to try to talk with them about current events, but doesn't anymore because he was just making himself upset. They have their own worldview, and that's that.

Do you ever talk to the extremist atheists in an attempt to get them to alleviate their condescending egos? How did that go? You will find extremists in just about any philosophy. These extremists usually are not interested in listening to points of view that are contrary to their own. So, attempts to get them to moderate their behavior generally prove to be pointless.

i sometimes will talk to people with pretty extreme views, but when that's accompanied by an extreme ego, then i usually avoid them. we have some campus preachers that pretty much just stand there and scream at people, and it's useless to try to talk to them since they are not there to talk. of course, this is the case with anyone who has something to scream about, not just religious people. i am pretty average, but i like to think i am more than semi-rational. : )
