One gets a job and starts paying for the expenses that he incurred. If he was old enough to spend the money, he should be grown up enough to dig himself out of his own debt hole. He'd be too old to be expecting mommy and daddy to clean up his financial messes. I'd say it's time for that person to grow up.

If your parents are willing to help you, they are entitled to an explanation on how you got into this mess. The rest of the conversation needs to be what are your future plans to make sure this does not happen again. This happened to my friend's daughter. My friend took out a loan to pay off the high interest credit cards and took $100.00 a week from her daughter until the loan was paid off. The daughter never got into that situation because she was held responsible and acountable for her actions.

I don't know how old you are, but if you are over 18 and spent the money irresponsibly, you are on your own as far as I'm concerned. What makes you think your parents are responsible for your debts in any case? I wouldn't give you a dime until you told me what it was spent on, and you provided a realistic plan to pay it back. That's what the bank does, and unless your parents have Citibank tattooed on their butts, I don't know why you are asking them for the money in the first place. It puts them in a bad spot and makes you look useless. A no-winner for your poor parents. Sorry, but I guess I just hear too many whiney rants on this site about why someone isn't doing something for them, when it is a person's own responsibility to take care of themselves.
