Most Tennis ball manufacturers have differant processes for the manufacture of Tennis Balls, the smell has a rubber base, and possibly a formaldehyde mixture of chemicals to protect the felt of the ball, other chemical compounds may be mixed but they are usually kept as trade secrets per manufacturer. Formaldyhyde can be harmful in large doses or concentrations, so it is probably that mixed with the rubber that you are getting a wiff of. If this is the case, my dog Nicky is addicted to this stuff that coats these balls because he will go nuts over a tennis ball. http://www.indiamart.com/gvrrubbers/
