How do I remove somebody from my gmail chat list, without removing their contact from my account?

Well, you have two options: 1. hover over their name in the chat toolbar. On the pop-up, click "video & more" and then "never show" (towards the bottom). This will allow them to continue to chat with you, but their name and status will never appear in the chat tool bar. 2. same as 1, but click "block" instead of "never show." This will prevent them from chatting with you at all, though they can still e-mail you, etc. So, depending on what you want, choose one of the above.

The first answer is great, if you don't want to chat with the person it will be best if you block that person, the contact won't be deleted but the other person will never know if you are online and you won't either. Regards.

Do the following: put the mouse on the contact of the chat contact list you want to remove. A window will popup. Click in the "More"(top right corner of the window) then select "Block". The contact is removed from the chat contact list, but remains in the gmmail contact list
