My first thoughts are why people care so much? It's like others have said, it's not a performance enhancing drug so it'd hardly have done him any good come competitions.

I don't care if he smokes weed or not. It's not helping him swim faster and he's not getting high and then doing something where people's lives depend on him.

My thoughts are that this young man (who I happen to know slightly) is destroying a public image that was very carefully crafted by his parents, his coaches and his manager. He needs to be more careful. There are a lot of younger swimmers who look up to him.

He's human. He may have fans and people that admire him, but it is pathetic if he is ridiculed for this. It's his life, not the media's.

The guy won more gold medals then anyone in history. Screw it. It's not like he was shooting black tar heroin directly in to his eye. He smoked some weed, big deal. We've had presidents that have admitted to smoking weed.

I think he's a complete and utter idiot. He knows he has Marfan's. He knows that he will likely have heart issues due to the Marfan's and I'm sure he is smart enough to have seen the studies that show pot is worse than cigarettes (just to start with, its unfiltered). I'm sure he is also aware of the number of athletes that have been stripped of medals for drug use. Why set such an untouchable record and then turn around and do something so stupid that is going to call it into question?

I'm convinced that the people who make the biggest deal out of this are the people who feel guilty about something in their own life OR just feel so downright crappy about their own lives it they get their kicks out of ruining others lives. He trained, he won, he's not perfect - no one is.

I could not care less if the dude catches a buzz once in a while. I will say someone in his position should know that it's a bad idea to do so where it's possible for someone to take his picture. He should have been careful to only toke amongst his most trusted friends and be sure no photos were taken. Those endorsements are pretty sweet, best to look after them.
