It's a series of books, by Jon Christopher ... "The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, and The Pool of Fire". These books had machines called "Tripods" (which I imagine looked similar to Speilberg's creatures in "War of the Worlds"). In the Christopher books, they take people up, install a metal dome over the brain, then control everyone thereafter. It's about the resistance to the machines.
