  • It is grammatically good. It's not all that awkward. I'm not sure why you say it is, but, either way, the grammar is fine.
  • It is a little awkward. I would take out the word 'for', though. 'Allowing for' usually implies a cause and effect relationship, which is absent here. it might be better to say that the government 'followed a Laissez-faire economic policy.....' The 'f' is not capitalised and there is a hyphen between the two French words in this particular phrase. Also, I would put the Supreme Court reference right after the word 'government.' I might also put the dates right after the 'Gilded Age', since that is what it refers to. And it should be 1880s and 1890s, not 1800s and 1890s.
