I have heard them referred to as seamen but it may became less popular as society has become more pc or at least more aware of double meanings.

They do.....ass.:-)

They are called seamen!! My grandad was an able-bodied seaman or something like that during the war.

I thought the Army called the entire service the Chair Force and not the Air Force.

I'm sorry, i've got to do this..... All the services give different salutes to...... Army.................................Airforce..................................Navy

BTW, I was Navy. I got around the problem by getting assigned to Engineering -- which doesn't mean a desk and calculator in the USN, but a job below decks tending the boilers or main propulsion. So I was a lofty Fireman. Ha! But looking back to the days of wind power, I have enormous respect for the guys who climbed into the rigging and made those clipper ships go. The way they fought hand to hand when boarding an enemy ship, I wouldn't risk teasing them about being Able Bodied Seamen!
