hand-eye coordination and problem solving are the first things that come to mind.

Good question. Hand eye co-ordination. Reading. Puzzle solving. Spelling. If using a pc the list goes on!! Being able to use a computer. Typing skills. Being able to use the internet, etc.. We monitor our kids constantly, but in general we have no problem with it.

keeping whining kids occuppied

I spend good time with my nephews,playing them.
