Our ability to delude ourselves, and cause harm to ourselves and others through these delusions. Examples: Gamblers who continue to gamble until they have lost their home and their savings, alcoholics who continue to drink even when their loved ones leave them and their health deteriorates, drug users who know the drug is killing them but don't want to stop. What mystifies me most about this very common human trait is that it doesn't seem to serve any positive purpose. Most traits we have for a reason - aggression so that we could hunt and survive as humans. Cooperative spirit so that we could farm together, hunt together, help one another in times of crisis. Loving spirit so that we could raise families. But what positive purpose does delusion serve?
