Essentially it means doing what the majority thinks is right. One of the risks inherent in a democratic set up.

It's a pejorative term for being respectful to others. People use it to denigrate the idea that everyone deserves respect and consideration towards their feelings, so they can excuse themselves from it. As in, "I don't go in for that political correctness nonsense" is a socially-acceptable way of saying, "I don't care who I offend; it's fine to be [racist, sexist, or whatever kind of bigotry the speaker is trying to defend]"
-
I think the working definition of it appears to be to not do something if you think it will offend. What would be smarted would be to acknowledge the differences and educate each other about our cultures and what to expect from each other, and even find common ground. I am not sure what being PC started out as, but the way it works now is rather counter-productive

It's the idea of not offending anyone by what you say. I once heard someone describe it as "Telling someone to got to Hell in such a way that they look forward to the journey."
-
You talk rubbish in order not to offend!
-
you don't want to offend anyone
-
Being politically correct usually means being actually incorrect.
-
To be a Jane Fonda democrat/socialist
-
It depends on who you talk to. Usually, if someone refers to you as politically correct in a fit of rage, then you've said something that's so open-minded that they are unable to see what you mean because it conflicts with their own cultural biases.
-
being politically correct is just another way to tip toe through the barnyard and not getting manure on your shoes...you dont track any in the house...but you still smell like shit...

Aesop described it in the story of the man, his son and the donkey: the man walks, the son rides the donkey: the boy is criticised for being lazy SO the boy walks and the son rides: the man is accused of cruelty to his son SO they both ride: people mutter because they are making the animal suffer SO neither rides: they are called stupid because they have a perfectly good animal and they are both walking. THe moral is: you can't please everyone, and if you try, you end up looking like an idiot, so you should do what is right. Sadly, the politically correct have no idea of right and wrong, and try to accommodate everyone's opinion. THey might as well be carrying the donkey.
-
That people have yet another reason to take offense at straight talk.
-
Who knows? It changes every day!
-
Saying what the majority of people want to hear and doing what they want you to do whether it's the right thing to do or not.

Well, there's the cynical view, the sarcastic view, the tongue-in-cheek view, and the comedian's view... all of which are expressed here. I think the best view is simply to follow the Golden Rule... to be humble and consider the feelings of others. Admittedly, easier said than done.
