He also concluded his benediction with "May the force be with you".
-
Here's how he ended the benediction: "Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right." One way to look at it could be to see it as a package deal. Some are starting to come to pass, but we need to have all. If you're ahead of the curve then so much the better for the country.

see my comment on my question: I'm white, he WASN'T racist, he played off the old rhyme: If you’re white, you’re alright If you’re brown, stick around If you’re yellow, you’re mellow But if you’re black, get back. ...it was a sweeping historical overview, not a serious assessment of each race in a single word. look at the rest of the Benediction (transcripts abound) -- it was a very COOL prayer and set of notions in the main.

I think Morgan Freeman put it best when he said, and im paraphrasing, '(if you want to end racism) stop talking about race'
-
I don't see the yellow complaining about not being mellow. It was simply a rhyme.
-
Nothing -it was a border line racist comment.

I dont know... but I dont know that the responsibility to improve race relations doesnt just fall on 'white' people. Besides, most of the 'race' debate in this country is manufactured by race baters and politicians that depend on the perception of racial strife for job security. Stop talking about race. The issue will go away.

I don't think that was border line. I think that was messed up of him to say. I'm not trying to be all sensitive, but that guy has got some serious issues.
