  • Great question .. not to mention that we wouldn't have won our war for independence without France or have that beautiful lady in New York's harbor.
  • Only idiots who don't know what they are talking about do that nowadays. They just jump on a bandwagon. I think it is ironic that some Americans make fun of French, but they are probably sitting back calling us the fattest country in the world or something lol. I think we could learn some thing from them, I'm all about teamwork. :)
  • It's not okay, not anywhere close. I agree with you that calling them cowards is completely ridiculous. If refusing to participate in a pointless war is cowardice, then I say cowardice is fantastic. The US has a lot to thank France for, and I think that a lot of people forget that. Points for the question +
  • look, people call the irish alcoholics, they say the french are frogs, americans are idiots, germans are nazis, belgians are pedophiles, the list goes on. theres always gonna be some stupid untrue sterotype
  • Triumph The Insult Comic Dog talking to a Frenchman: "Pardon me, I only know your basic french expressions like 'I surrender'"
  • They've been called cowards long before the Iraq war (assuming that's what you're talking about, I didn't even realise they got stick for that). They bottled WW1 and WW2 as well, Napoleon was useless, and they've never done anything of note since the Normans invaded
  • All that needed to be said has already been said by the other users who have answered your question. Never the less it will be good to understand that always acting like bullies and calling others names does not do the USA a favor it is bad for your country as it is not good to be alone and have all the countries against you. Don't think it is easy to be an American abroad, I have a friend who is and she is having many problems and a hard time though we live in France. She is doing her very best to drop her accent though not heavy as she is from the New England area and their English is somewhat neutral. But all the same they spot foreigners and it is NOT the French who are rude to her and others but basically two other nationalities. The US citizens need to show a bit of kindness and consideration to the rest of the countries and their inhabitants that little bit will solve the problem. Merci
  • I gave you points for your question. In answer to your question about France...does France have a right to make fun of the U.S.? (they constantly make fun of th U.S. on a daily basis) Yes, they do have that right. I don't and never did agree with the war that we are in now ...but we do have a right to speak out against it or in favor of it...and that is our consitutional right...You can't argue with that!
  • It's ALWAYS been okay to make fun of France and it's not because they didn't "join the most idiotic war of the century" that they are called cowards but because they allowed Hitler and Nazi Germany to march into Paris unopposed. When other European nations were giving up their lives in order to defend their homes and families from the Nazi's, the French government chose to "join" up with Hitler until the rest of the world came and "rescued" them. They willingly turned themselves and their country over to the most evil regime in history.
  • It's acdtually propeganda from a war, I want to say WWI, that just stuck in our culture. That's it.
  • Americans make fun of the French for two reasons: (1) they refuse to get involved in any of the American debacles; and (2) they refuse to speak English in their own country. So sue them! They're still more civilized, more sophisticated and more intelligent in one day than all the Americans put together in their lifetime will be
  • France has never been anything but a friend to the US, from making it possible for our ancestors to gain our independence to being the best kind of friend: one that tells you when you are screwing up.
  • look, it is not just the US that see them this way. it is universal....just because u see the war as "idiotic" is also apparent ,universally, that many do not!!! France is cowardly.... justme:)
  • Making fun of France for not going to war has nothing to do with "making fun." It has everything to do with marginalizing a country and a particular way of thinking. If you portray a country as cowardly for not supporting a war and deeming it "unpatriotic" or "un-american" then you set a negative/zero tolerance for that type of thinking. You get blind patriotism and branded as "un-patriotic" for not supporting American ideologies - such was the thinking that got America into war in the first place but people are waking up.
  • I believe this war was idiotic (I'm not American but my country sent troops to Irak). There is however such a thing as doing the right thing for the wrong reasons and I think that France (the government if you wish, not the entire population) just looked for an easy way out. As far as I know their contribution to Irak peacekeeping and reconstruction is also rather low, not to say nonexistent. This I think goes to show that their position had to do not only with pacifism but also, in plain English, with not giving a **** about Irak, or terrorism or the US. Call it cowardice, call it free-riding, politically it could have been smart but if Americans are not feeling that crazy about France these days I kind of understand why.
  • Could it be the spineless bastards attacked us when we landed on the African coast during WW11. Or how about when they circumvented the UN sanctions that were laid out with Iraq so they could receive oil for food.
  • They earned the name coward when they allowed hitler to take over without a fight. Other countries had to go to war FOR france, sounds cowardly to me.
  • i don't think it is no one gets mad at switzerland for being neutral! america sucks lol
  • Well, there was a poll the day before France announced they wouldn't be going to Iraq. 54% of Americans disagreed with starting the war. France simply agreed with us US citizens.
  • You're serious right? Because "Jacques Clouseau" is an embodiment of French foolishness. The French have had a culture that has tolerated foolishness for centuries. Because they folded at the first sign of resistance from the Nazis. And because of the Treaty of Versailles, the Germans were humiliated to the point of being extra agressive come the 1940's. Remember Vietnam? Why did we get started there? It was known as French Indo-China for a reason. They had their colony there, and they couldn't handle it, we stepped in to help and they stepped out. A careful reading of history would give one indications that the French arrogance is well misplaced.
  • we each need an "outgroup" to make fun of. the french have or haven't done things that seems to justify, in the minds of their bullies, making fun of them. we honored the french when their armies and navies fought and died for our independence, yet, just a few years later, we were ready to stand against her militarily. i'm not sure if the french didn't want to join us because they were cowards, had knowledge of weapons of mass deception, or something else.
