  • The Stockholm Syndrome describes the process by which kidnap victims, etc. develop an emotional bond with their captors. It is often based on the victim's attempts to relate to their captor or gain the kidnapper's sympathy. The syndrome is named after a bank robbery at Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm which turned into a hostage situation lasting from August 23 to August 28, 1973. The victims kept on defending their captors even after their six-day ordeal was over, and psychologist Nils Bejerot was the first to refer to the syndrome in a news broadcast. Perhaps the most famous case is that of Patty Hearst, who was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army, but eventually joined the group and took part in their activities.
