spade have pointed tips, shovels more refer to the tool with the straight top
Let's call a spade a spade (sorry - couldn't resist). Seriously, a spade is a shovel with an end rounded out coming to a point in the center. There are other types of shovels, too. SOme are flat across the top so you can scrape somewhat evenly layers of earth as you go. And post hole diggers.....well, that's enough for one day :)
A spade cuts into the earth, a shovel is for moving and carrying loose materials.
a spade can win a game at spades and a shovel is used for.. well shoveling stuff. anything more then that and you lost me :)
A spade is a shovel with a short shaft that end in a stirrup handle, it's merely one of the many specialized tools that fit the description of shovel.
the size - the shovel has a long handle for foot use, the spade is hand-held. don't you remember the Shoveler from Mystery Men? he lost his shovel in a fight, then whipped out a little spade & prevailed.
A spade is more narrow and pointy ...better for digging, a shovel is wider, made more for scooping. and snow shoveling.
What is the difference between a spade and a shovel? 2 years ago ... Spades (there are many different types) are for digging. Shovels are for moving dug stuff.
