have you ever been drunk? its fun! also people drink to overcome their fears and do something they wouldn't normally do
-
Because while there may be negative aspects to drinking, there are many positives which most people feel outweigh them.
-
Because its fun when done in moderation.
-
Drinking is great fun and very cathardic.
-
because i guess people dont like this reality

People are self-destructive. Why would anyone want to purposely read something that compromises their judgment (referring to the Bible)?
-
Because their judgement was off in the first place due to their desires or emotions also being off. Most people drink for reasons that even they dont realize and are on a sort of auto pilot for an easy escape from the things they can't handle or deal with. Even recreationally, even intermittentely with no addiction what so ever. *I absolutely love your screen name by the way, very clever!

It is an escape..until morning then it is twice as bad.

Sometimes it's good to get rid of those old brain cells that will die soon anyway:)

Who wants to be in total control all the time. Sometimes it's nice to let loose.
-
Because sometimes a cocktail just tastes good. I drink on occasion - mostly socially, sometimes just my hubby and I. I only drink within my own house (unless it's half a glass of wine when we're out to dinner), and I have NEVER been "drunk". I know I've had enough when I start to talk too fast. Then I switch to water for the rest of the night.

1. It relaxes you 2. You do things you want to do but normally may be too shy to do 3. It's fun

I don't really think people make this connection when drinking - or if they do, feel that they won't need good judgment while drinking or can postpone it for a while. The problem is that if they end up driving or making decisions that effect their lives or those of others, sound judgment is necessary. If you know you are not going to drive, be called on to take responsibility for something important, have to respond to an emergency, or otherwise be "present" fully and if you know you are not going to drink to excess or become dependent on drinking for relaxation, a false sense of confidence, or stress relief, you might make a case for it. It sounds like a judgment call.

While I am with everyone who has responded so far(for the most part, anyway)I kind of see both ideas too. I am a recovering alcoholic, the necessity was there for me to drink, often and hard. Why?Why would someone do this, like many others said,"Who wants to be in control all the time?""sometimes it just tastes good"Etc. The fact that not all people drink like I did is exactly why they can,and I can't. I have an addictive personality,I would drink to escape,to run from anything that I percieved as a threat, real or not. They(most of the responders,so far) can do it for the social,or correct, reasons. They want to take the edge off,try to relax, they do it because it works. Most people can see if they have had enough, some(the ones we all hear about) can't stop drinking till they get sick, cause an accident, get the DUI..etc. The ones I am concerned about are the latter, the others are 'normal' people, doing what it takes to feel and be 'normal'. Why do we drink water?because the body needs it.Why do they drink alcohol?because they feel the need to relax, their nervous system needs a break,a little time to be calm. Are they wrong?,NO,not in my book, just because I can't do it(with moderation) doesn't mean others are irresponsible or alcoholics too. Hat's off,to you who are responsible, productive members of society. Pity for those who still can't get past the influence and cause grief to others.
