  • I am a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. In the Choctaw Tradition, the "indian" name is more like the 'real' name. A child will be given a name at birth, based on the ideas and tips of the family, but when they reach a certain age, it sometimes becomes apparent what their 'real' name is, and they choose to change their name, or add on an extra name. It may be different for full-blood who were raised in the traditions, but for those of us who are removed from the origins, scattered like the embers of a fire, we can only forge new ones, or try to guess from the stories of the past.
  • your native name has nothing to do with your english name it is usually a name of what kind of person you are your personality or a trait and it is given to you by a tribal elder that is close to you.
