How can I learn to overcome my fear of roller coasters? I am going to Six Flags over Texas for my birthday and I don't want to disappoint my family. For once I would like to ride what the rest of my family wants to ride.

the only cure for fear is your fear itself :)make a mind over matter technique and get some strength with your family and you'll see rollercoaster is a mismatch for you :) besides you'll miss the greatest fun of your life if you won't go for the ride the first time with your family :)

you just have to force your self, go on smaller rides and gradually build up to bigger ones. (i couldnt even ride the smallest coaster but now i can ride anything)

Six Flags over Texas has some great rides and is home of the "Texas Giant" a beautiful timber roller coaster, I rode on it with a 77 year old and he wanted to go again, honestly although big, its a good ride for a first timer and kind on the stomach so give it a go first, there are smaller figure of 8 coasters but the rides are short and the repetitive figure of 8 can cause motion sickness. One thrill ride you don't want to start on is "Mr Freeze" its insane!

Best of luck on the Texas Giant with your family, its a fun ride and you get your picture taken on the way around.
Have Fun and try not to get addicted.

I was the same way! Didn't get on a roller coaster until I was 16yrs. old b/c I was so scared! Start easy & work yourself up..For me, it was the going straight down ones that really scared me, I could handle other rides that went in loops, so I started myself on the coasters that had more "loops" than "drops" and worked my way to the others(I still won't ride any that just drop you straight down). Once you ride your first one you will be fine, just make yourself ride it...You'll probably be mad at yourself for waiting so long to finally do it. It's just getting through the first one, that's the worst part...the anxiety..They really are fun!!!

Just go on one. When i was younger i hated rollercoasters, but when i went on one a few years later..it was so much fun.If you really hate them, just hold your breath..most of them only last about a minute!

Close your eyes, reassure yourself you can do it, ignore that stomach pain, everything will go in slow motion when getting ready (or at least it did for me), enjoy the ride, and reap the benefits.

I use to have a similar fear, not a huge one, but I definately worried. I researche the subject, and it helped, just like with snakes. Roller coasters are designed to keep a person in their seat even without all the safety stuff using g-force. In a loop, you don't fly up into your safety harness and other such things. You look up the accident rate, and it is surprisingly low, if you fear something that you know to be unnecessary, research the topic and it might help...happy coasting to you!

Just think that it is much safer to ride on a rollercoaster than it is to fly in a plane with no wings.

study the physics behind designing a roller coaster.
normal forces, angular accelerations and such.

then you can confirm your self that your ride is safe.

actually, that is me being way to nerdy.... sorry.

  • Keep in mind that rollercoasters are very safe rides, you are dozens of times more likely to die driving to the park than riding all of the rollercoasters. Don't go on the really nauseating ones. I had a fear of upside down rollercoasters that I cured in early August 2008.

feel the fear and do it anyway!
although, fears and habits make you who you are. your not a disappointment because of them for example if your sister hated enclosed spaces and your family went cave walking and she stayed at home, would you think of her as a disappointment?

Take a Dramamine and go out and have a great time! I forced my friend on the Millennium Force at cedar point which was then the Highest roller costar, and she was terrified till I got her on it and she thought that she was going to die at first, but once it got going she loved it and even ended up putting her arms up on the ride!

Don't start out on one of the really tough ones - go for an 'easier' coaster that doesn't go upside down or anything. Work your way up to the bigger ones! :) Most of all, have fun! It's your b-day!

start out with closing your eyes like my brother did and he got over it after his 2nd real coaster ride. or you could just suck it up, it really isnt that big of a deal, and if youre afraid that youre going to barf, take some dramamine less drowsy formula to keep you from motion sickness w/o making you tired. coasters are fun and you get incredible feelings

Grit your teeth and go for it!

Once you have been on a ride and come out the other side intact you will feel a bit better.

    Tip: Avoid the Pirate Boat!

I can't believe everyone tells you to do something you don't want to do. What kind of family would be disappointed if you choose not to go on a wild ride? I hate those things.

I tried it once or twice, and I have never seen the point of getting half sick and hurting every muscle and bone in my body and calling it fun!

If you don't want to do it - don't do it!
